Used Metal Detector Buyer’s Guide

When new metal detectors are ordered by small and large food, textile, pharmaceutical, lumber and petrochemical corporations, they are built to the specifications needed to optimize their performance with your particular product, they are built “product specific”. Therefore finding one on the used market that suits your product and your auditor’s sensitivity requirements is not an easy task. For reference: New systems are built to order, 8 week lead time seems to be the standard no matter which brand is purchased.

When looking for a good functional used or refurbished metal detection system, you need to know that not all products can be passed through any metal detector. You have to be sure that the detector that you purchase will not only allow you to run your product without constant false rejecting, but also be working at an optimum operating frequency to maximize the sensitivity levels to detect the smallest metal contaminants possible.

For example if you purchase a detector that was once designed to run a wet conductive product and you want to run a dry product, it will detect metal however it will not detect the smaller contaminants.

For example if you purchase a detector that was once used for a dry product and you would like to run a wet conductive product, it won’t function at all. It will constantly false trip.

Below is a short list of the most important things to take into consideration before a purchase is made.

  • Can my product run on a high or low frequency?
  • Do I need dual frequency if I run different products?
  • Is it better to metal detect my product once frozen or before?
  • What sensitivity will I achieve with ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless steel in my product?
  • If the detector is too big will it still detect the samples that I need to detect?
